Volvo’s Naughty Convoy

Volvo S60Boring, safe, predictable – these are all things we’ve heard said about Volvo. And lets be honest, in the past whilst a Volvo may have been the logical choice when car shopping, they never really got the heart pumping.

It seems the Swedes have taken notes over the years, meticulous notes I’m sure, possibly involving charts and mass analysis. All of which may well have paid off…

There’s something not quite right about the new Volvo S60, it’s a Volvo that will get the heart pumping.

We tagged along to find out more as the Naughty Volvo Convey pulled into Gateway, Durban. Immediately I found myself asking, “Is this a Volvo?” Upon closer inspection it indeed carried the signature Volvo attributes and at the same time managed to be an incredibility good looking car.

The Naughty Volvo Convey is making its way across the country introducing people to the new S60 and showing them you can have the best of both worlds.

To add an element of fun to their cross country road trip, the convey is performing a series of dares along the way – all submitted by the Naughty Volvo Convoypublic via social media. Some of the most notably funny dares include dressing team member Wilco Pelser up as a baby and inviting people to wax his legs. Whilst in Durban Volvo brand ambassador ProVerb (from Idols) was dared to learn how to surf. “The weather and elements were definitely against us, luckily we had Jason and Brandon Ribbink with us and we were in good hands,” said ProVerb.

With all the promoters involved in the campaign looking like super models and a tour bus kitted out in white leather and stripper pole, you would be forgiven for asking, “Volvo? Really?” But yes, and it looks to be an amazing fit.

“Volvo used to be seen as the traditionally safe brand, but now you can see they have been brave enough to try the fun sexy element and its definitely paid off,” commented ProVerb. “I mean I’m a rapper and a Volvo ambassador – enough said.”

Indeed it seems like Volvo is defining a new image in the market, and it doesn’t appear to be one aimed at the corporate-Bluetooth-headset brigades. Instead it’s aimed at people who have a sense of style and don’t have to sport their manufacturer branded golf shirts or lay their oversize car keys on the bar when having a drink.

Naughty Volvo ConvoyProVerb himself cruises around in a C70 Convertible and is also a big fan of the XC60, something he described as, “The family man car, but definitely not a lazy car.” ProVerb even admits that he has chosen to drive rather than fly for an upcoming holiday – and I guess with planes falling out the sky more often and Volvo becoming safer and now cool, we can’t blame him.

As we said our good byes to the Volvo team over a few drinks, ProVerb proved that things are always best when mixed up a little. The rapper orders pink drinks, much to the shock of the confused waiters – ProVerb explained that when you find something you like, you have to go with your heart, and it appears Volvo have done the same.
