Can you predict the 2011 Car of the Year?

It’s that time of the year when the Wesbank/SAGMJ Car of the Year is announced to South Africa at a glamorous banquet in Joburg. It’s the most coveted prize in the industry, so as you can imagine the competition is rather stiff.

This year’s list of finalists include:2011 COTY

BMW 530d (SMS COTY BMW)
Citroen DS3 Sport (SMS COTY CITROEN)
Ford Figo 1.4 (SMS COTY FORD)
Honda CR-Z (SMS COTY HONDA)
Hyundai Ix35 (SMS COTY IX35)
Hyundai Sonata (SMS COTY SONATA)
Kia Sportage (SMS COTY KIA)
Opel Astra (SMS COTY OPEL)
VW Amarok (SMS COTY AMAROK)
VW Polo TDI (SMS COTY POLO)

Not the easiest task is it? I’ve driven a fair number of those cars and couldn’t for the life of me decide which was best. The BMW for example, an exquisite piece of engineering but just insanely expensive. The Honda CR-Z has plenty going for it, well priced, environmentally friendly and razor sharp to drive but can it deliver more “wow” factor than the Citroen DS3? The possibilities are endless.

Now, you might wonder what exactly it is that I’m getting at. Well, Wesbank in conjunction with the South African Guild of Motor Journalists are giving away a week for two worth R50,000 – all you have to do is submit your prediction of the winner online or via SMS and you could be one of ten lucky people to attend the exclusive COTY Finalist Banquet (to be held on 8 March).

The person who correctly predicts the winner will be sent off on a luxury week for two at a five star venue in their city including breakfast, lunch and dinner, R10,000 spending money and the use of the Car of the Year for a week.

Not too shabby. So what are you waiting for?

To enter SMS COTY + the code of the car you think will win to 32378*

*SMS’s are charged at R1.00

Well its car of the year so no its not really that hard to predict… Motoring journalists are more stuck in the mud than a reluctant pensioner, so you can write off anything fun or interesting (I’m talking about the honda, bmw and citroen here). My money is on the VW polo because it’s boring, outdated, worse than most of it’s competition, but because its got the name “VW Polo” stapled to its arse will come out on top.

My money is on the Ford and KIA. You right Nick, VW seems to be very much overrated. The Ford stands a very good chance, as it’s the best budget car you can buy today and the KIA for design and features and competitive price. Hope one of the two wins! 😛
